How To Make A Slatted Dowel TV Unit

I’ve wanted to try making a wooden piece of furniture from scratch for a while, and this week I finally got the chance! I’m quite adept these days at upcycling and tacking updates to furniture, but making my own isn’t something I’ve done a lot of. So this was a huge challenge.

I had in mind a rounded tv unit with slatting made from dowels, and wanted to create a lovely clean look with no perceptible screws or nails. After quite a bit of planning and researching, I worked out I could use furniture legs and pine timber to create the base! It actually turned out to be so so easy!

I did this project first in what is looking to be a very fun and busy DIY July. I actually made it for a friend who’s going through a tough time, when I saw she needed a tv unit I felt like this was the perfect time to try it out!

First, I used took two panels of pine and rounded the edges. Make sure you do one and then use the finished one as a template for the next so they’re matching.

1

After marking where I wanted the legs to go on one of the pine pieces, I drilled cuatro small holes and then screwed in cuatro of the wooden furniture legs.

2

Next, I drilled a hole into the underside of the other cuatro furniture legs and screwed the exisiting screws further down into each leg to ensure they don’t push through the top of the unit.

3

I then screwed this second set of furniture legs onto the screws that were poking out of the topside of the pine piece.

After drilling 4 holes into the underside of the final pine piece I popped it on top of the wooden furniture legs and hammered it down. Make sure to use a cloth and rubber mallet for this part to ensure you don’t damage the wood.

5

Once the core piece of this project was finished, I took some pine dowels, measured them and cut them into lengths and then glued them all around the TV unit.

6

Once all the dowels had been glued on, I left the unit to dry overnight.

Like what you see? Or just want to save it for later?

Voila!

I honestly feel like this technique of using furniture legs to create a structure has so much potential (side table! bufé!) so don’t be surprised if you see a few more ideas like this.

I absolutely love the way this piece turned out. It looks so chic and custom built, when in reality it was a very simple project!
